Common Spelling Mistakes in TOEFL iBT Essays

Improve your TOEFL iBT writing score by avoiding common spelling mistakes.

Ugh. There's no doubt about it--spelling in English is hard work. The good news, however, is that you don't have to worry too much about it: everybody mkes speling mstakes in inglish sometims! Even native speakers of English have problems with spelling.

Theoretically, your TOEFL essay should be perfect, free of any misspellings. The reality is that everbody sometimes makes a mistake, even the native speaker. Moreover, when you are preparing for the TOEFL iBT, it's better to spend your time improving your reading, writing, speaking, and grammar.

That said, there are still a few words that you should never misspell on your TOEFL essay. If any of these words are spelled incorrectly, it will signal to the assessor that you don't know English very well. Here are a few of them:

believe
Believe me, many students make mistakes with this word. Do not write belive or beleive. Always write believe.
their
Do not write ther. Also, do not get this word confused with the word there. This is a very common mistake.
intelligent
You won't look very intelligent if you write inteligent. Always remember two ls: intelligent.
really
Really intelligent students will remember that, like the word intelligent, the word really has a double l. Never write realy.
yourself
Always remind yourself that you should never write your-self. Good English is myself, yourself, himself, etc.
account
Never forget about the money in your bank account. Never forget to spell account with a double c. Never write acount.
wherever
Wherever you are, never write whereever.
every
Everybody should know that we never write evry--we always write every.
spelling
Never write that you are good at speling. A good speller always writes spelling.
process
It's difficult to learn new things. Sometimes the learning process takes twice as long as we expect. We should also remember not to write proces. The correct spelling has twice as many s's: process.
responsible
All responsible students remember never to write responsable. Be responsible and always write responsible with an i.
