Using Active Sentences in Your TOEFL Essay

These practice exercises will help strengthen your TOEFL iBT essay writing skills. They are also good for general grammar practice--they will help you move quickly from passive to active.

Instructions

The following sentences are written in the passive voice. The sentences are grammatically correct, but they sound awkward. The writer has expressed ideas in a strange and unusual way. Use the active voice to rewrite each sentence in a more natural way.

1. A letter to my grandmother is going to be sent by me tomorrow.

2. Happiness cannot be bought with money.

3. The book was read by me in less than two hours.

4. Dancing lessons are taken by my wife and me twice a week.

5. A bike was ridden by her to work yesterday.
